Regardless of your definition of 'all-day' battery life, I think it's safe to say that the Apple Watch Series 7 delivers on Apple's claim here, even with Always On Display enabled.

Add in things like workout mode, active heart rate monitoring and sleep tracking, and battery life changes but in general, almost all variants average over 24 hours, and all deliver at least 22 hours of battery life in any mode. Of course, it's not perfect -- the battery life hasn't improved, and Apple's sleep tracking still generally lags behind the competition. Other differences come down to style and color options — the SE is available in two sizes, three different colors , and with or without cellular connectivity. Battery life is also reliable if not spectacular — I'm able to go about a day-and-a-half between charges with the brightness set at medium. WatchOS 7's sleep tracking does make managing the battery more annoying, however, and the SE doesn't have the Series 6's slightly faster charging capability. It takes a solid two-plus hours to fully charge, and if I'm wearing it while I sleep, that means I have to find time during the day to charge it up. As a result, I end up taking it off and dropping it on the charger multiple times a day — when I'm in the shower, before I go to bed, etc. — to give it micro boosts, which is way more annoying than just charging overnight.

Of course, you can just charge it overnight if you don't care about the sleep tracking features, which are admittedly of limited utility anyways. It does everything the Series 6 did only slightly better, with a larger screen, a sleeker look, better durability and faster charging. I'm not happy that Apple hasn't upgraded the battery life at all but it seems, until something drastic happens, that Apple Watch users are stuck with one to two days between charges. So, your wrist size sits in the goldilocks zone and you still can't decide. Battery Life is super important to most people and the 44mm Apple Watch has a 20% bigger battery than the 40mm model. The 44mm also has 29% more pixels to power which offsets the larger battery.

Initial reviews for the device have been generally positive with some caveats. Reviewers praised the watch's potential ability to integrate into everyday life and the overall design of the product, but noted issues of speed and price. Then again, I'd suggest you save yourself $120 and get the all-new Apple Watch SE. It's basically a rebranded Series 5—it doesn't have a blood oxygen sensor or ECG app, features most healthy runners don't need and won't use.

It also has the older S5 chip, which seemed plenty fast until just last week. Most importantly, it starts at only $279 and can be had in a cellular version, too. It easily outperforms Google Wear OS-based watches like the Moto 360, and offers a much more fully realized smartwatch experience than Fitbit's more health-centric models. If you already own a Series 5, the Series 6 is really only worth the upgrade if you absolutely must have the always-on altimeter or SpO2 readings. But at the same time, I would have liked to see more from the Series 7. Longer battery life is always on my wishlist, but Apple could have also done more to leverage the Series 7's existing technology.

A broader selection of new watch faces designed to take advantage of the Series 7's larger screen would have been nice. And more than a year later, I'm still not entirely sure what to make of the results from the watch's blood oxygen sensor. We also expected to see an upgraded U1 ultrawideband chip in the Series 7 per a Bloomberg report that was published ahead of the watch's launch, but that didn't arrive either. As of September 2021, new Apple Watches come with watchOS 8 preinstalled and require an iPhone running iOS 15, which is available for the iPhone 6S and later. Another factor that makes it hard to say whether the battery life is definitely better is the faster charging. Apple promises that it's 33% faster, and I've seen it charge from 30% to 80% in half an hour, which I would've expected to take about 45 minutes before, so I think the promise is bang on. Apple also says that 8 minutes of charging before bed gets you enough juice for 8 hours of sleep tracking, even if it's empty. Apple is late to the game with sleep tracking capabilities, as most smartwatches and fitness trackers already offer this feature, and Apple's version is still pretty basic. After you wear the Apple Watch to bed, the Health app on your iPhone shows when you fell asleep, woke up, and your total time in bed and asleep for the night.

It also shows a graph of your heart rate, with your maximum and minimum recorded beats per minute. It charts your sleep for the week and month, and shows your average time in bed and average time asleep. The Apple Watch Series 3 features a slightly bigger display than the 40mm Apple Watch, although this is primarily owing to the larger display.

It can keep track of the number of laps and distance during Swimming workouts. During swimming, the touch function can be manually disabled with 'Underwater mode'. In comparison to other Apple products and competing smartwatches, marketing of the Apple Watch promoted the device as a fashion accessory.

They don't have the broad sweep of smart features and or the broad app ecosystem as the Apple Watch but battery life is far better, they come with a decent selection of fitness and health features and they cost significantly less. The Apple Watch casing, unlike typical mechanical or digital timepieces, must accommodate a Retina display, a system-in-package , a battery, and sensors.
